This is a view of Winterset during the Civil War. The photo is taken looking east across the foundation of the first courthouse, which is just being built. The two-story brick building was probably built by Mr. Hornbeck. It is still standing, although the front has been replaced. It currently houses Studio 316 and is believed to be the oldest building in Winterset. The photo was taken in 1862 by Ed Hyder, a prominent photographer in the community for many years.
